Today was my last day of class … ever. In a week and a half, I will be a UNC graduate. For today’s blog, I wanted to talk about one of my favorite classes at Carolina. By the way, if you thought this blog wasn’t going to involve something spooky, you’re wrong. This blog is about my English 148 class … Horror. Sure, it sounds like a weird class, but it’s really interesting. I took this class with Tyler Curtain and he was ah-mazing! We pretty much just watched scary movies, read scary books, and then talk about them as a class. If you’re an introvert, maybe this class isn’t for you. Participation is your biggest grade. We watched a lot of Stephen King we watched It, Carrie, The Shining, and Misery. We also watched a lot of classic Halloween slashers like Halloween, Friday the 13th, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Have you ever thought about how scary movies make you feel? Is it anxiety? Disgust? Fear? Anger? We really took a deep dive into understanding how different scary movies made us feel. There are different negative affects that we feel when watching scary movies. During this class, I learned what negative affects I liked, and which ones I don’t like so much. There are scary movies that I love and then there are ones that hold my breath the whole time I watch. My absolute favorite movies that we got to watch were Get Out, Halloween, The Lost Boys, and Blade. I will admit, there were a few that were very tough to get through, but everyone's taste is different. Not a lot of people know about this class which is why I wanted to tell others about it. Professor Curtain also teaches a similar class, English 146 - Science Fiction/Fantasy/Utopia, I haven't taken it but I’ve heard great things! I wish I would have taken more classes with him because it has truly been such a unique, cool class. If you don’t go to UNC, your college may offer a similar class. If you’re into scary movies, sign up for this class with professor Curtain, you won’t regret it!
